Saskatoon- a pleasant surprise

With rainy weather in the forecast, we decided to leave Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park a day early to start our trek of 9 hours to Edmonton.  We drove 3.5 of those hours on lonely, flat highways and arrived in Saskatoon.

We immediately liked the vibe of this "small city with a big-city feel".  Downtown was clean and well-laid out.  We happened upon the Beer Wars and the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) 3-on-3 championship festivals.  The kids pulled hard towards the basketball and Nathan, in particular, was on cloud nine!  There were food trucks, live music and many street games to watch.



We chose to spend our Friday night doing what many families do in Saskatoon...attending live horse-racing.  Marquis Downs stadium was full of people of all ages, including many young families.   The energy of the crowd and the anticipation of picking the winning horse kept us all entertained.  We even won some bets!!

    I used to live in Saskatoon. I loved it there. Be sure to do the Meewasin trail along the river.

Velika Planina - Slovenia

Well, it turns out, you can find the backdrop you need for your make-believe at Velika Planina in Slovenia. You can hike (a few hours) or take a cable car up to a high-altitude plain where you will find a village nestled on the lee-side of an ever-present windy peak.  A hearty people live here - a tribe of herdsmen.  They build unique huts, in an ancient way, and allow tourists to explore their space/land. This is not an adrenaline jolt, but it is quaint and unique and undeniably historical.  Come for the views, stay for the peace and quiet. Slovenia - Ljubljana

 A Long Time Coming... COVID wasn't much fun for anyone. We fared well, but amongst the things COVID destroyed was our wanderlust - we stayed close to home, and leaned into Canada .
